A form of punk rock and experimental electronic music characterized by the use of non-traditional instrumentation ranging from raw materials (glass, metal, wood, etc.) to the tools and machines that process these materials (hammers, drills, presses, etc.) to the manufactured objects themselves (phones, vacuum cleaners, televisions, radios, etc.). Industrial music first arose in the mid-1970s with groups such as Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Throbbing Gristle.
