A formant is a peak of frequencies in the spectrum of a sound which may be associated with a resonance in the mechanism of the production of the sound. Vowel sounds may possess more than one formant in different part of the spectrum. The term may also be used in relation to musical instruments. (J. Borwick, quoted in Rodolfo Caesar (1992). The Composition of Electroacoustic Music. PhD Thesis, University of East Anglia.)
