* About the course
This intensive four-day workshop aims to equip you with both the skills and confidence to further develop your own composition, sound design and performance systems using Max/MSP.
* About the lecturer
Graham Booth is an experienced musician, programmer and workshop leader who has been developing musical systems in Max/MSP for over five years. Graham is currently completing a PhD at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, looking at collaborative approaches to performance with laptop computers. At the research centre, he has more recently taught Max/MSP to undergraduates on Dr Eric Lyon's "Advanced Sound Synthesis" module.
* What is Max/MSP?
Max/MSP is a visual programming language for music and multimedia, developed by San Francisco-based software company Cycling '74, where musical systems are created graphically by connecting together object boxes with patch cords. During its 20-year history, it has been widely used by composers, performers, software designers, researchers, and artists for creating innovative compositions, performances, and installations. Using Max/MSP, it is possible to develop new instruments and performance tools that go far beyond the possibilities of commercial music-making packages. * What will be taught?
Each day will focus on a different creative area of Max/MSP, exploring its possibilities for composition, performance, sound design and interaction. Themes for each session will be posted in the messages section shortly. In the morning we will work with a small set of max objects, which will be explored through individual work and exercises. In the afternoon there will be the chance to apply these techniques creatively to develop your own musical systems. Examples will be taken from the Max/MSP community, the tutor's own work and from the recently published book "Electronic Music and Sound Design" by Alessandro Cipriani and Maurizio Giri. http://www.virtual-sound.com/en/

* Are their any prerequisites?
This advanced course is aimed at students who have some familiarity with composition, MIDI, digital audio and basic synthesis. No prior knowledge of Max/MSP is required, but there will be opportunities for experienced users to develop existing work and increase their proficiency. Each session will proceed according to the abilities of the group. * What do I need to bring?
Participants will need to bring their own laptop (Windows or MacIntosh), installed with a working version of Max/MSP. A thirty-day trial version is available from: http://cycling74.com/downloads/

* Day 2 - Techniques for Composition

- timing and sequencing
- automatic pattern generation
- DEMO: designing a networked sequencer

* Day 3 - Techniques for Performance
- AIM: build a live sampler, play together over the network
- internal control: keys, mouse, mic
- external control: MIDI controller, iPhone
- introduction to sound processing

- TASK: connect your sampler to a networked sequencer and play collaboratively
* Day 4 - Extensions and Viewpoints
- developing individual projects
- working with larger projects: modularity and reusability in Max
- extending Max: Gen / Max For Live / Jitter
- an alternative view: networked musical systems in SuperCollider
