I once talked about genres with a Chinese artist. She said that she does not know about her genre and she might not belong to any one. She thinks that a genre of an artistic work is just like a label. On one hand, it is summarized and inducted by the later generations; on the other hand, in order to get a piece well-known, some artists put their works into a style or genre as a lable. At the same time, she also thinks that as independent or avant-garde artists do not have to think about too much on the genre they are belonging to; and they also do not need to follow any of the genres to create their own music.
