PORTFOLIO

Please provide us with a CD containing work of breadth (diversity) and quality that you feel is representative of your creative interests and skills.

ESSAY

We would like you to write a short essay (750-1000 words) describing the work you have submitted within your portfolio (this is supplementary to anything you provided as 'programme notes'). You should consider:

LISTENING EXERCISE

Visit our Jukebox and write a couple of paragraphs in response to each of these tasks:

1) Choose three of the following tracks (all in the 'Audio' section) and discuss them in terms of musical and production concerns, their likely influences etc:

- Mike Foyle, Alien Zoo
- Aaron Bott, Run & Jump
- Tamsin Cullum, For the Last Time
- Sean Elliott, Piggy in the Middle
- Chris Spearman, Reddim
- Julein Robert Legault-Salvail, Just One Song
- Bill Newsinger, Squirt

2) Describe the relationship between the audio and visuals in these pieces (all in the 'AudioVisual' section, need VPN if you are in China):

- Ryan West, Cubed
- Julien Robert Legault-Salvail,
- Annelie Nederberg and Marcus Nordgren, Of Matter...

Things to consider: what sounds are used? where do they come from? how are they used? is there always an obvious correlation between movement in the audio and visuals (what about 'visual silences'?)? is colour/shape significant?

3) Investigate the following (need VPN if you are in China):

- Sam Dodson, Swatch (in the 'Software' section)
- Sam Barnes, Modified Toy Ensemble (in the 'Performances' section)

These are two improvised performances using very different tools and yielding very different results. Describe/compare them. What are the musical materials (how they are produced and what they sound like) used in each? How predictable are these sound-producing systems, and how is predictability/unpredictability managed by the performers in each case?

4) Listen to and/or view other Jukebox entries. Which of these do you like/identify with most and why?
