作品以主题与变奏的手段展示给听众。旋律与节奏动机的反复是通过变型、序列、音色变换来实现。原始材料于2000年通过脉冲星粒子合成器生成。每个粒子都经过作者精心编辑，作品音响中的音高也是通过粒子的重复实现的。
Pictor Alpha unfolds in a process of theme and variations, as a repeating melodic and thythmic motive passes through transpositions, permutations, interjections, and timbral transformations. I generated the original source material in 2000 using PulsarGenerator, a sound synthesis program developed by Alberto de Campo and me. Using the original source matertial, I then edited each particle individually by hand. This involved rescaling the amplitude of each particle, adjuting it in time, possibly filtering it, positioning it in space, modulating it, modiying its phase, and so on. The pitched tones were formed by replicating individual particles at audio wavelengths. In this manner of working, the screen of the sound editor becomes like a painter's easel, holding the sound material in place.
